POSITION SUMMARY: In accordance with Hospice plans and policies, the Residential Hospice (RH) Nurse Manager is responsible to ensure the provision of quality care, within current practice guidelines, to patients and families admitted to the Residential Hospice. They will work in partnership with other Hospice staff and collaborate with attending physicians, nurse practitioners and staff from the Extra Mural Program (EMP). They will be a representative and ambassador for the Hospice Miramichi organisation in the community.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Patient Care and Family Support Responsibilities:
Represents the organization and directs a coordinated team effort for quality patient care, family support and customer service.
Collaborates with the EMP to prioritize admissions with the goal of ensuring the right patient is in the right place at the right time with the right care provider and supports.
Receives and reviews all applications of patients referred to the Residential Hospice. Processes admissions and provides orientation to the facility and care program.
Provides education and support to families and coordinates additional support to attend to their needs.
Collaborates with attending physicians, nurse practitioners, community healthcare providers to ensure quality care and support.
Attends RH rounds each morning and provides clinical leadership and support in discerning and meeting the care needs of residents.
Ensures care plans are in place, kept current and implemented appropriately.
Provides leadership and education to staff, volunteers, medical residents and students on an ongoing basis regarding patient care, family support and symptom management.
Ensures medications are properly administered and that pain and other symptoms are alleviated with minimal adverse effects.
Human Resource Management:
In partnership with the Hospice Board of Directors (BOD) Human Resource Committee interviews, hires, trains and motivates qualified staff.
Ensures adequate RH clinical staffing 24 hours/day and supervises/monitors their work.
Conducts annual RH clinical staff performance reviews and provides a comprehensive report to the BOD along with staffing recommendations.
Program Administration:
Ensures all Hospice policies are adhered to and completes incident reports when they are not.
Provides regular reports regarding the activities of the RH operation, including monthly statistics and year-end reports.
Ensures adequate supplies are available within approved budgets.
Ensures adequate record keeping.
Sits as a member of Whole Community Palliative Rounds (EMP) and the Horizon Health Network Palliative Care Committee. Chairs the RH Admissions Team and the Hospice Management Team.
Collaborates with the Volunteer Coordinator regarding volunteer support and services and with the Grief Coordinator regarding grief and bereavement services.
Works closely with the Hospice Miramichi organisation to support, promote and develop palliative care services both in the RH and in the community.
General Duties:
Develops/reviews clinical policies and reporting forms as needed.
Participates in training and educational initiatives as required.
Provides leadership input to the Hospice Management Team and to relevant Hospice palliative care committees as needed.
Represents Hospice in the community in a positive manner.
Maintains awareness of resource management, monitors for opportunities to improve operational efficiencies, reduce costs and minimise wastage.
Communicates with the BOD on a regular basis and recommends resource upgrades and policy and practice improvements to enhance care, reduce risks and improve efficiency.
Maintains personal clinical competence.
Workplace Health & Safety
Agrees to take workplace health and safety training through Work Safe NB.
Participates in proactive health and safety activities while performing all duties.
Abides by the NB Occupational Health & Safety Act and General Regulations as well as Hospice workplace health and safety policies and practices.
Conducts a work space hazard identification and risk assessment for all areas under your supervision and implements practical measures for eliminating and reducing hazards.
Ensures all staff under their supervision are adequately trained in workplace health and safety and in appropriate, safe use of equipment.
Establishes and maintains safe workplace practices.
Conducts monthly inspections of all areas under their supervision.
Sits as a member of the Joint Workplace Health & Safety Committee.
Is responsible to notify the BOD of any health and safety risks or concerns.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Registered Nurse (Bachelor of Nursing preferred) with an unencumbered active license in the province of NB.
A minimum of 5 years of clinical management experience, home health nursing or hospital experience. A background and/or education in palliative care nursing is preferred.
If not already certified, be willing to work towards Hospice Palliative Care Nursing Certification.
Knowledge of Canadian hospice palliative care standards.
Maintain certification in Basic Life Support.
A strong desire to support the work of Hospice Miramichi and be a dedicated team member.

Strong organizational and leadership skills.
Computer literate - MS Word, MS Power Point, Excel, etc.
Ability to foster teamwork and to direct and supervise staff and volunteers in a professional and supportive manner.
Ability to work independently with a minimum of supervision.
STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE: Demonstrate ongoing competency and a commitment to continuous quality improvement in completing all duties and responsibilities as detailed in this job description, in accordance with all Hospice polices and approved plans.
PROBATION AND PERFORMANCE REVIEW: The first six (6) months of employment will be a probationary period. Performance will be reviewed on an ongoing basis with a formal review at the end of the probationary period and annually in March of each year. Input may be sought from employees, volunteers and clients and also from ongoing patient and family feedback. Outcome will be based on the extent to which performance meets expectations.
